Course Goals

#1: Gain an ecological, economic, and aesthetic appreciation for the prairie

Prairie lands are arguably the most important places for supporting our way of life in the US, yet they are often ignored even in our society, even by those of us concerned about the environment.  Through first-hand experience and wide-ranging readings we will deepen our understanding and appreciation of this overlooked ecosystem.

#2: Learn to marshall scientific information to influence policy

"If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them." Henry David Thoreau

We expect that many of you will have signed up for this course because you have interests and opinions about environmental issues. Our goal as teachers is to help you use a sound understanding of ecological principles to refine your ideas, then persuade others, whether they be in government, business, or academia.

#3: Develop a toolkit for life as an active citizen

Many of us care about environmental issues, but it can be hard to find the right way to get involved.  To get started, we have focused the assignments on real world applications, developing sound ideas, then presenting them to others in a convincing manner.  Furthermore, all our work for this class will be made available to the broader community through the internet.
