Hi Justin -- Thanks for confirming your class participation in Saturday's workday. Eric Ulaszek & Bill Glass will be the workday staff leaders.

I've included their cell phone numbers if you need to reach them for any reason regarding the workday. Eric - 815.207.0405 & Bill - 630.247.0262.

The workday should wrap up around 2.30pm, pending on weather and energy levels there is over 6,000 acres open to the public which you are welcome to roam, walk and take photos afterwards.

Best,

Chris

RE: Midewin Sat

Great to hear Chris! Your email came in right at the start of class so we voted on who wants to work in the prairie and most hands went up! I'd say we are 15 maybe more. None of us have been to Midewin before, even though a couple students live down that way, so I hope there is time for a little tour/walk picture taking afterwards. I'm guessing with the critical mass we could accomplish a good amount in not too much time. Our aim was to be on the road (couple cars and a van) at 8am. My cell number is 6192448468. I'll call when we get close.

C u soon

Justin

Hi Justin -- Yes, the workday is still on. The weather may change the planned activity, but we will still have work to do. The original plan was to move dormant plants that have been stored in bunkers this winter into our shadehouses, but with the weather being too cold, we don't want to rush the move. Plan B is to cut invasive brush in the restoration areas or work in the horticulture building cleaning seeds. Our ecologists determine the work based on the weather, number of people that show up and work that needs to be done.

Let me know how many students to expect and I'll pass the information to Eric Ulaszek who will be leading the workday. Dress in layers & outdoor appropriate clothing, wear sturdy shoes, bring a lunch and water. Plan on getting here at 9am to meet Eric at the Horticulture Building which is located at the Midewin Headquarters off of Route 53. I've attached a map.

Easiest driving directions, take I-55S to Exit 241, Go East on River Road, North on Route 53, Midewin's HQ is about 1 mile up the road on the East.

Best,

Chris

Midewin Sat

Hi Chris, I

I'm teaching a Prairie Ecosystems course at UChicago

We are thinking of trekking out to the work field day this Saturday at Midewin. What do you think, is it still on? I've heard great things about the park but haven't been there yet myself. There are 28 students in the class, I'll find out tomorrow how many might make it. They have a couple assignments to generate a digital naturalist guide and a conservation/restoration plan so a little guidance would be appreciated.

I'm still learning myself.

Just wanted to check in.. Hope to catch up soon Justin
