"Crerar has always been on my list of buildings that would be a good fit for a green roof." - Barry O'Quinn, Senior Manager, Sheet Metal and Masonry, Facilities
"Personally, I think this is a wonderful idea and I would welcome a green roof! Officially, I again think this is wonderful idea." - Barbara Kern, Co-Director, Crerar Library.
"I'm a strong supporter of sustainability in our buildings. The University is slowly starting to incorporate sustainability into our construction plans; the Searle Center will be LEED Silver certified, the new dorm will have several environmentally friendly features, so it is happening" [paraphrased] - Suzanne Ekaitis, Project Manager, Design & Construction, Facilities
Mission Statement
To implement a Green-Roof on the top of Crerar Library.
A green roof on Crerar would benefit the environment and provide aesthetic benefits for students and faculty in the adjacent buildings whose offices look out onto the Crerar roof. Another major benefit would be an improved public image for the University, considering the 'D+' grade issued by the Sustainable Endowments Initiative, and specifically the 'D' grade for the “Green Building” category.

Planned Meetings
Thursday, May 3rd at 2pm. Meet with Barbara Kern (Co-director, Science libraries. Head of Public Services, Crerar) and John Carey (Client Service Manager, Facilities Services) in the atrium. We will discuss initial portions of the project, including feasibility, possibly load-bearing capacity, prerequisite faculty involvement, etc.
Discussed feasibility study, project approval process, and potential hurdles. John Carey will be looking for the needed contacts within the University as well as relevant data (e.g. load-bearing capacity).
Undetermined. Meeting with Barry O'Quinn (Suzie Ekaitis will try and get in touch with him; she mentioned he would know about the green roofing, structural information, etc.).
Undetermined. Follow-up meeting with Barbara Kern, John Carey, others. Possibly Richard Bumstead, grounds manager for the University.
Possible meeting May 22, afternoon. TectaGreen | Tecta America Corp. might be able to come and give the roof an spot-inspection. I'll [Dennis] contact Barbara and John to see if they're available.
Dennis meeting with Suzanne Ekaitis from Facilities and the Sustainability Council, May 24, 2007, 2pm.

Roofing Structure
The Crerar roof is of an IRMA design (inverted roof membrane assembly). This design has the insulation sitting on top of the membrane as opposed to traditional roofs.
The pitch of the roof is essentially flat with just enough grade to assist in drainage.
Water drains from the roof into an internal gutter system.
The membrane is a form of PVC.
The roof of Crerar is built in the following manner: Starting from the top floor there is approx. 18 inches of concrete, on top of the concrete there is membrane layer, above this is a layer of insulation (no information on the type of insulation), and on top of this a final layer of crushed stone. There may be additional layers of adhesive.
[Forthcoming] Information regarding regarding energy consumption and a drawing of the roof.
Progress
[Please note any discussions you have had with staff, other Universities, interested parties, etc.]
5.24.07 : I [Dennis] met with Suzanne Ekaitis from Facilities. We discussed some of the aspects of project submission. She is also a member of the Sustainability Council. Facilities would most likely oversee the project, though research depts. and student groups could be responsible for the actual work. However, this would require access and liability to be taken into consideration. She recommended that I contact Blair Archambeau, Assoc. Provost for Planning, to make sure that we are going about the right things in the right way, as well as to clarify that this project actually has a chance of passing through administrative channels. I've contacted her regarding a possible meeting. I also stopped by the Development Office in the Administration Building and spoke with Heather, who is the administrative assistant there. She will do some research as to whom exactly we would need to contact and get back to us as soon as she finds out. There is no staff member devoted to "special projects" or something similar, so this will just require a little patience as she asks around.
